Elder Quentin L. Cook, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. When the building was scheduled for demolition in 1965, Latter-day Saint missionaries and leadership arranged to purchase the stone. Later it was relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, for permanent preservation and is located at the Church History Museum. Replicas are on display at the Scotland/Ireland Mission home in Edinburgh, the Provo Missionary Training Center, and a museum in Stirling, Scotland. You may have seen the quotation and pondered the significance of its message. President Russell M. Nelson reaffirmed the message at the 50th anniversary of the Missionary Training Center on January 31, 2012 (see R. Scott Lloyd, “A Jubilee Year for Missionary Language Instruction,” Church News, Feb. 4, 2012, thechurchnews.com).

  2. In a talk given in 1957, President McKay spoke of the message. He said it had inspired him as a member of the Church and as a missionary to serve faithfully and fully accept the responsibility to do his part. (See “Pres. McKay Speaks to Pioneer Stake Youth,” Church News, Sept. 21, 1957, 4; see also “Preparation of David O. McKay: A Mission Experience” [video], Media Library.)

Elder Dale G. Renlund, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. Dr. Selzman has been quoted as saying: “Whenever you start talking about health care with [President Nelson], he gets a little twinkle in his eye. … It’s just amazing to see how energized he [gets] talking about all that stuff” (in Sydney Walker, “As President Nelson Turns 100, His Family and Associates Reflect on His Life and Legacy,” Church News, Sept. 7, 2024, thechurchnews.com). I have personally seen that “health care twinkle” in President Russell M. Nelson’s eyes, but it is nothing compared to the sparkle he got when he spoke of Jesus Christ.

Sister J. Anette Dennis, First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency

  1. “The only permanent solution to the differences that divide us is for all of us to follow our Savior’s teachings and to gradually become even as He is” (Dallin H. Oaks, in Joel Randall, “Following Christ Is ‘a Continuous Commitment and Way of Life,’ President Oaks Teaches European Saints from Belgium,” Church News, July 14, 2025, thechurchnews.com).

Elder Ronald A. Rasband, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Elder Quentin L. Cook, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. See “Handcart Camp Dedicated in Iowa as Historic Site,” Church News, Aug. 9, 1980, 3, 5.

  2. On July 23, 1994, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Rock Creek Hollow Monument and paid tribute to the faithful Saints who died from the trek over Rocky Ridge (see Julie Dockstader Heaps, “Trail of Handcart Pioneers Sanctified by Sacrifice,” Church News, July 30, 1994, 8-9, 11). President Robert Scott Lorimer accompanied President Hinckley at the dedication. As stake president of the Riverton Wyoming Stake, he played a central role in identifying and overseeing historical and spiritual actions for those who experienced the tragedy.

  1. President Dallin H. Oaks mentioned a painting by Maynard Dixon titled Forgotten Man, which hangs in his office in the Church Administration Building in Salt Lake City: “You see the sun shining on his head. His Heavenly Father knows he’s there. He is forgotten by the passing crowd, but in his struggles, his Heavenly Father knows he’s there. … I have been with that painting for close to 40 years, and it speaks to me and reminds me of things that I need to remember” (in Sarah Jane Weaver, “What I Learned from President Oaks about the ‘Forgotten Man,’” Church News, Sept. 18, 2022, thechurchnews.com).

President Mark L. Pace, Sunday School General President

  1. It was recently announced that 200 million copies of the Book of Mormon have been distributed in this dispensation. That is truly remarkable. The Book of Mormon has now been translated into 113 languages, with 17 new translations in process. What a blessing to have the Book of Mormon in print, digital, audio, video, and other formats. (See Ryan Jensen, “Church Distributes 200 Millionth Copy of the Book of Mormon,” Church News, Dec. 29, 2023, thechurchnews.com.)

  2. President Russell M. Nelson, an internationally known heart surgeon before his call to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1984, gave a lecture at a medical school in Accra, Ghana, in 1986 on the history of heart surgery. Interviewed later by the media, he explained he was there “as a servant of the Lord to help [the people] become better citizens, to build strong families, to gain true happiness and prosper in the land.” He returned to Accra, Ghana, on November 16, 2001, for the groundbreaking of the Accra Ghana Temple (see “Ground Broken for First Temple in West Africa,” Church News, Nov. 24, 2001, thechurchnews.com).

President Russell M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

  1. “Church Historian George A. Smith concluded that 5,634 brothers and sisters received their endowment in the partially completed Nauvoo Temple in December 1845 and January 1846. Sealings of couples continued on through Feb. 7, [1846,] by which time more than 2,000 couples had been united by the priesthood for time and eternity” (Bruce A. Van Orden, “Temple Finished before Exodus,” Deseret News, Dec. 9, 1995, deseret.com; see also Richard O. Cowan, “Endowments Bless the Living and Dead,” Church News, Aug. 27, 1988, thechurchnews.com).

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. President David O. McKay encouraged “every member [to be] a missionary” when he presided over the European Mission from 1922 to 1924, and he shared that same message with the Church in general conference as early as 1952 (see “‘Every Member a Missionary’ Motto Stands Firm Today,” Church News, Feb. 20, 2015, news.ChurchofJesusChrist.org).

Elder Neil L. Andersen, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. Russell M. Nelson, in Jason Swensen, “Better Days Are Ahead for the People of Puerto Rico,” Church News, Sept. 9, 2018, 4.

  2. Russell M. Nelson, in Swensen, “Better Days Are Ahead,” 3.

Elder Quentin L. Cook, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. “Three of the five Ivory Coast stakes are among the top 25 in the Church in the percentage of adults [submitting] family names for temple ordinances,” and the Cocody Cote d’Ivoire Stake is the highest (C. Terry Warner and Susan Warner, “Apostle Visits Ivory Coast, Is ‘Impressed with Exceptional Spirit,’” Church News, Mar. 3, 2013, 4, 14). In the wake of the civil war and the closest temple being 12 hours away by bus in Accra, Ghana, this is marvelous evidence of faith and has resulted in personal and family peace.

Elder Neil L. Andersen, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. The Prophet Joseph Smith said: “Have the Presbyterians any truth? Yes. Have the Baptists, Methodists, etc., any truth? Yes. … We should gather all the good and true principles in the world and treasure them up” (History of the Church, 5:517). “We don’t ask any people to throw away any good they have … ; we only ask them to come and get more. What if all the world should embrace this Gospel? They would then see eye to eye, and the blessings of God would be poured out upon the people, which is the desire of my whole soul” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 155). President Gordon B. Hinckley said: “Let me say that we appreciate the truth in all churches and the good which they do. We say to the people, in effect, you bring with you all the good that you have, and then let us see if we can add to it. That is the spirit of this work. That is the essence of our missionary service” (“Excerpts from Recent Addresses of President Gordon B. Hinckley,” Ensign, Aug. 1998, 72; “Words of the Living Prophet,” Liahona, Apr. 1999, 19). “We must be a friendly people. We must recognize the good in all people. We don’t go about tearing down other churches. We preach and teach in a positive and affirmative way. We say to those of other faiths, ‘you bring with you all the good that you have and let us see if we can add to it.’ That is essentially the essence of our great missionary program and it yields results” (“Messages of Inspiration from President Hinckley,” Church News, Nov. 7, 1998, 2; see ldschurchnews.com).

Virginia H. Pearce, First Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency

  1. “Cling to the Church and live its principles and I do not hesitate to promise you that your lives will be happy, that your accomplishments will be significant, and that you will have reason to get on your knees and thank the Lord for all He has done for you in giving to you the marvelous and wonderful opportunities that you have” (Gordon B. Hinckley, quoted in Church News, 3 Aug. 1996, 2).
