Elder Clark G. Gilbert, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. For a useful discussion of reasons people disaffiliate with religion, see the summary of recent research coming out of Brigham Young University as summarized in Justin Dyer’s Deseret News article “Latter-day Saints Are Retaining Faith at Uniquely High Levels in a Secularizing Society,” published in the Deseret News on December 15, 2025. The research finds that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints retain their faith at uniquely higher levels than other faith traditions, including with Millennials and Gen Z. Moreover, despite narratives that disaffiliation is driven entirely by disbelief, the majority of those who step away continue to feel religion is an important part of their lives and remain open to returning to religious participation.

Elder Neil L. Andersen, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. “If you can, by faithfulness in this life, obtain the right to come up in the morning of the resurrection, you need entertain no fears that the wife will be dissatisfied with her husband, or the husband with the wife; for those of the first resurrection will be free from sin and from the consequences and power of sin” (Brigham Young, “Remarks,” Deseret News, Dec. 3, 1862, 178).

Elder Neil L. Andersen, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. President John Taylor said in 1879, “We must [object to] feticide, infanticide, and other abominable practices … either in the shape of legislative enactment, judicial decision or any other adjunct of civilization” (“Discourse,” Deseret News, Dec. 31, 1879, 755; spelling modernized).

Archbishop Chaput also said that “some of our best Catholic institutions have either lost or greatly softened their religious identity. … Brigham Young is an extraordinary university … because it’s a center of learning enriched by its religious identity. Never lose that” (“The Great Charter at 800”).

Elder Quentin L. Cook, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. Brigham Young stated, “All I want is to see this people devote their means and interests to the building up of the kingdom of God, erecting temples, and in them officiate for the living and the dead … that they may be crowned sons and daughters of the Almighty” (Deseret News, Sept. 6, 1876, 498). Baptisms for the dead commenced on January 9, 1877, and endowments for the dead were performed two days later. The joy of this was expressed by Lucy B. Young, who said that “her heart was full in the prospect of being received by [her dead relatives] with open arms, as all would be by those who could not do the work for themselves” (in Richard E. Bennett, “‘Which Is the Wisest Course?’ The Transformation in Mormon Temple Consciousness, 1870-1898,” BYU Studies Quarterly, vol. 52, no. 2 [2013], 22).

Elder D. Todd Christofferson, Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

  1. “A century ago, attachment scholar John Bowlby found that the bond created through the innumerable caring interactions between a mother and child is the critical foundation for social-emotional development. … And feminist scholar Sara Ruddick identified a mother’s ‘attentive love’ as the core of effective parenting. Through the ‘patient eye of love,’ mothers develop a special knowledge of their children-a knowledge that gives them unique insight into what the truly ‘best practices’ for each child should be” (Jenet Jacob Erickson, “Love, Not Perfection, Root of Good Mothering,” Deseret News, May 12, 2013, G3).

Elder Robert C. Gay, Of the Seventy

  1. A bottle of milk and its strippings (rich in cream) was at the center of a dispute between Thomas B. Marsh’s wife and Mrs. Harris, who had agreed to combine resources and make cheese. When Mrs. Harris found that Mrs. Marsh didn’t include the strippings with the milk but kept them for herself, Mrs. Harris complained, and the women quarreled. Thomas Marsh took the matter to the bishop, who sided with Mrs. Harris. It went from the bishop to the high council to the First Presidency, all of whom agreed that Mrs. Marsh was in the wrong. This drove a wedge between Thomas Marsh and the Brethren. Soon after that, Thomas Marsh testified before a Missourian magistrate that the Mormons were hostile toward the state of Missouri. (See George A. Smith, “Discourse,” Deseret News, Apr. 16, 1856, 44.)
